5 Ways To Travel Smartly

Being a savvy traveller can save you and your family thousands of dollars. If you know what to do when you’re driving across the country, stepping on an airplane or booking a spot on a cruise line, you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank in order to enjoy your dream vacation. Check out these 5 awesome tips on travelling smartly!

• Plan Ahead.
Cliché as it may sound, planning a trip itinerary is perhaps the best way to make sure that you save money when you’re travelling. Looking to visit Florida? Outline the places you want to visit and figure out exactly how long you’ll be able to spend in the region. You’ll save lots of time and money if you’re not sitting by the side of the road wrestling with a map, trying to figure out what to do next. Make it simple for you and your family. Create a spreadsheet of must-see attractions on the computer and print it out. Highlight the top 5 and make sure that you visit those attractions. In addition, print out any driving directions ahead of time and keep them with you while you’re travelling.

• Spend Thriftily.
You don’t have to spend a mint to feed the whole family. You will find that simple fast-food restaurants or even small coffee shops sell cheap, quality-portion foods that can keep you satisfied for a long time. Instead of eating 3 big meals throughout the day, eat a simple brunch and save your big meal for dinnertime. Bring along snacks for when the munchies hit.

• Make Reservations.
You can save a lot of money on hotel accommodations if you make reservations during the low season. For example, September is not a busy season for hotels, and if you book hotel rooms during this time for the following summer, you can save a lot of money and last-minute rush.

• Air Travel Packages.
If you’re travelling with a big family, use airmiles credit card packages to bundle up the cost of airfare and bring the total down. Buy airfare in round-trip bundles and the price won’t be nearly as high.

• Vacation Packages.
Planning a vacation through a travel agency can actually save you thousands of dollars. They’ll bundle up all of the expenses ahead of time and you won’t have to worry about over-spending while you’re on vacation.

Thanks for the tips. Item number two however is difficult to do coz when we go for a vacation, we splurge on food, :p We are more adventurous in terms of trying new dishes, hunting for a unique resto and trying its specialty. Thus, I make it a point to avoid spending on souvenirs instead and taking as much photos as I could of the experience and the beauty of the place. 🙂

but i also must add not to plan too much ahead, especially when planning for large groups…though i was able to get refunds, almost half went to cancellation fees…
