I am currently reading Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. It’s about an elderly couple planning to go on a ship cruise to skip the chaos, stress, snow, and expenses of the holiday season. I am only halfway and yet I read no clues if they’ll ever be successful or not.
Anyways, I smiled after first few pages because I know some people who really go to great lengths to skip the brouhaha of Christmas season. Instead of buying holiday ornaments, putting up Christmas lights, mailing holiday cards, or hosting parties, they choose to go on winter beach breaks. While we talk about our Christmas presents, they come back tanned and with a new exotic cocktail recipe. We go green with envy and secretly hope that one day, we will be brave enough to do that as well.
This morning, the wife dropped by for tea and I asked where are they off to this time. Her eyes lit up and said she is waiting for their travel agent to update them on budget friendly Dominican Republic holidays. Wow, Christmas at the Caribbean!!
The Dominican Republic is a Caribbean country that occupies the eastern two-thirds of the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. The western one-third of Hispaniola is occupied by the country of Haiti. To the north lies the North Atlantic Ocean, while the Caribbean Sea lies to the south.
With its brilliant golden sands, rugged highlands and mountains, numerous national parks, world-class hotels, exotic cuisine, and varied water sports, it does make for a perfect winter beach break.
How about you? Where is your dream winter beach break?
