United States Capitol

I received this beautiful postcard last week from Washington D.C. It is the second card sent to us by Miss Laura.

The White House has architectural style of American neoclassicism.

They started to build it in 1793.

The United States Capitol is the meeting place of the United States Congress, the legislature of the federal government of the United States. Located in Washington, D.C., it sits atop Capitol Hill at the eastern end of the National Mall. Though it has never been the geographic center of the federal district, the Capitol is the origin by which both the quadrants of the District are divided and the city was planned.

In its early days, the Capitol building was not only used for governmental functions. On Sundays, church services were regularly held there – a practice that continued until after the Civil War.Up to four U.S. flags can be seen flying over the Capitol. Two flagpoles are located at the base of the dome on the East and West sides. These flagpoles have flown the flag day and night since World War I.
